Want to know the best way to get a total body workout in the shortest amount of time? Perform compound exercises, exercises that require you to use more than one muscle group. For example squats recruit not only your legs, quads and hamstrings, but also your lower back, and abs to stabilize your body throughout the exercise. You also burn more calories while doing compound exercises as opposed to isolation exercises. Other examples of compound exercises include bench presses, military (shoulder) presses, and dead lifts.
